What does a Lineman do?
A Lineman constructs, dismantles, maintains, operates,
patrols and repairs de-energized and energized, overhead and underground transmission and distribution lines and all associated equipment to serve and maintain service to electrical customers.
How do you prepare?
If you want to be a lineman, you can go to school to learn the trade. There you will learn communication skills and earn a First Aid Certificate. You also have the opportunity to earn a Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Before pursuing this field, you should consider whether you meet the general occupational and program work requirements: lift at least 80 pounds, have manipulative skills to work in awkward positions to accomplish tasks, work in both extremely hot and cold weather, work in a team environment, etc.
What’s the pay like?
As a Lineman in Iowa you can expect to earn approximately $46,000 a year, according to Iowa Workforce Development.
